Collaborative innovative care, focusing on spine and sexual health

The Center of Excellence for Genito-Pelvic Dysesthesias (COEGPD) is a cooperative effort between the specialists at San Diego Sexual Medicine and the Excel Spine Center. We are the first in the United States to diagnosis, treat and manage sexual dysfunctions caused from injury to the sacral spinal nerve roots (cauda equina) of the spine.

Irwin Goldstein, MD
Dr. Irwin Goldstein is a world-renowned expert in the field of sexual medicine, editor in chief of the Journal of Sexual Medicine and the founder and medical director of San Diego Sexual Medicine. Dr. Goldstein has pioneered the management of many sexual dysfunctions including those lesser known genital dysesthesias such as persistent genital arousal disorder.

Choll Kim, MD, PhD
Dr. Kim has identified treatable lumbar and sacral abnormalities on MRIs that can be repaired through minimally invasive surgery resulting in an opportunity for cure of such dysesthesias, from persistent genito-pelvic arousal, persistent genito-pelvic itch and/or persistent genito-pelvic pain including lack of genito-pelvic sensation.

Barry Komisaruk, PhD
Dr. Komisaruk is a Distinguished Professor of Psychology at Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey. His research includes identifying the brain regions that respond to genital stimulation to generate orgasm in women and men, and the neural pathways by which genital stimulation gains access to the brain via spinal cord and vagus nerves.
